Since receiving his first drum kit at age of eight, Joe Lastie was destined to carry on the traditions of his musical family, which included his mother, two grandparents, his aunt Betty, and uncles Melvin, David, and Walter "Popee" who was a drummer for Fats Domino. Born in New Orleans, his grandfather Frank Lastie was the first to play drums in church, and Lastie recalls musical evenings at home in his youth attended by prominent musicians such as Ornette Coleman, Professor Longhair and James Booker. Influenced by this rich musical environment.
